the amen corner redeaux

From time to time I write about the "amen corner" at our local gym. Well what with the world cup, the "amen corner" has been revised and is now the world cup corner. The funny thing is that it is still the same people, a selection of black, mexican and white women of indeterminate age with their hair in curlers and color coordinated work out clothes and shoes with make up bags to hand. These women are the same ones who are usually there as part of the lose weight through prayer group but now they are watching the world cup. Instead of a chorus of "hallelujahs", and "praise the lords", they now sing the praises of their team with national soccer cheers, wild whoops and yelps. One woman got so excited about a goal the other day that she jumped up in the air off the precor elliptical and nearly killed herslf on landing as the pedals had shifted. Joining them are members of the clean team who sit and polish the free machines and floor around them for long periods of time and cheer as well although in a more restrained manner. Too bad they don't pay the same attention to the rest of the gym.

It will be interesting to see if the group reverts to it's less secular persona once the world cup is over. Can the measure on one's faith be found in the worthiness of one's team? Inquiring minds want to know. In the mean time its a fun spectacle to gaze at while sweating and gasping in the rear ranks of the treadmill joggers.
