I picked up Sadie, the Welsh corgi from the hospital today, and she is back home.
The final diagnosis is hepatic encephalopathy due to a possible external hepatic shunt. She also has some small bladder stones.
She seems quite bright and responsive. She is not showing any weakness or difficulty in movement, is responsive, and is obviously seeing well so compared to how she was a week ago, the improvement is considerable.
She is on several antibiotics, lactauose for liver support, antacids to ease the stomach wear and tear from the antibiotics and a three day session of de-wormer to make sure that no internal parasites are adding to the protein load her stomach has to handle.
She will go back to see the surgeon in two weeks when she is a bit stronger and stabilized as she will need surgery to locate and correct the shunt, remove the bladder stones and do a biopsy on her liver to see what else is going on.
In the meantime, the kitten Ike is spending a lot of time loving on her in between terrorizing the older cats and Sadie is happily following the kitten around and throwing herself on the floor for frequent belly rubs.
