Notes from Texas

In my year end purging of files, I came across an article that I pulled from the local paper not too long ago regarding a sport craze that is sweeping the south especially among some of the more militant Evangelical Christian groups.

The headline reads "Body Slamming For God" and the article discusses Ultimate Christian Wrestling, a losely affiliated group of professional and semi professional wrestlers who compete weekly to "put Satan in a sleeper hold."

Each even starts with prayer. Hym singing, testimony and gospel preaching occur between each bout. The wrestlers are not paid and the boss takes no salary using the "love offering" collected at the weekly matches along with sponsorship to cover costs.

So much for "turn the other cheek", around here it's "break the other arm" with the fighters being "bashed, bounced and power bombed in the name of God."
