I took it easy last week and focused more on cardio intervals at the gym than bike riding. My trainer Taylor has a new set of exercises which heavily involve the quads and hamstrings, along with a challenging set of core exercises which leaves me sore in places I haven't been sore before so it felt good to be off the bike.
This week I am back on the bike, in spite of headwinds, temperature or possible rain.
Today's ride involved a new variation, adding Ricefield road, to my standard Smithers Lake lake ride, which was actually quite nice. Of course the fact that I was able to cruise most of the 7 miles of ricefiled road at 25 + miles per hour, thanks to a hefty tail wind, may have something to do with the fact that I think this will be a nice addition to a pretty standard training route. Of course the downside is that the whole road is press seal paving, which vibrates badly and leaves your hands numb and I don't think I would be quite as enamoured with it had I had to ride it against the wind as there are very few trees or building to break the wind, but as it stands today, it was a fun 7 miles.
So on 52 miles my slow speed while going against the wind was 11.8, but at least I wasn't forced to granny gear entirely. My max was 28 at one point but most of it was around 22 mph. My overall average was 16 miles per hour which is not too shabby, and significantly higher than I was averaging two weeks ago so it looks like the time off the bike helped out a bit. I need to remember this for the future.
