I am doing a short taper down period as a training break before the big ride. I have to admit that, so far, it is coinciding with a period of pending rain and high winds which I am not sorry to miss. As part of the taper down, I am doing a twice weekly yoga class, along with just straight and easy jogging or eliptical work.
I am really enjoying the yoga although it is disconcerting how much flexibility I have lost. I'm thinking that I will probably continue with the yoga during the summer after the ride.
Taylor, the personal trainer is planning to focus on building arm, shoulder and back muscle strength and taking it easy on the legs during this cross training and taper period. So the emphasis in our sessions is now on more weight and less repititons instead of lots of reps at lower weights while alternating with core and balance.
It's a totally different type of workout for me so although it remains very challenging, and Taylor sometimes has to help with the last few repititions of each phase, the change of pace is nice.
The best news is that I can bench press 75 pounds which is just over 1/2 my own body weight.
Quite a change from 4 years ago when I started training seriously and could only bench press 15. Nice to see some real progress in strength.

Hey have fun! I am SO excited for all of you on this trip! Keep up the great work with weights-you will find that having a strong upper body and core does wonders for riding!
Yeah for 75 lb bench presses!
