My favorite SAG guy and I among the Texas Bluebonnets On any bike tour or race, the SAG (support and gear) van/team/person is instrumental in making the event possible and more enjoyable. On the tours I have been on, the Sag van drivers did everything from change tires and fine tune the bikes to cooking and fine tuning the food to meet the dietary needs of assorted bikers, whether vegan, vegetarian, carnivores, herbivores or omnivores. In the SAG van, the SAG personnel schlep the baggage, excess bikes, tires, tubes, tools and the extra personal gear that bikers can't do without but don't need or want at the moment. They provide water, nutrition, map assistance, and support along the route. They haul tired, discouraged and disinclined bikers to the next stop or destination. They park and check the riders as they pass to make sure everyone is accounted for. In short they are the biker's personal life line providing support, sustenance and sanity. The picture above is of my husband Phil who is my personal at home SAG guy. He is also my personal life line. He does most of the physical support, provides the sustenance and is my sanity check. He rides with me on the weekend although sometimes he'd rather not, he asks about my rides, encourages me to ride when I am trying to talk myself out of the ride, reminds me to carry my cell phone, allows me to buy the gear and stuff I need and want without question. He checks if I am hurting or exhausted and to see if I have eaten something at the end of the ride. He leaves for work quietly in the early morning and gets up with the animals on the weekends and lets me sleep. He rubs sore muscles and takes care of me in every way possible. In short he is one super SAG guy and I love him dearly. At the end of this month we will be celebrating our 34th anniversary. I hope I have him around for at least another 34.
