#6 Vicksburg to Yazoo City, MS

The way out of Vicksburg was complicated by road construction, brick streets and more rolling hills. We followed Carol, the guides' suggestion to just "get on down to the river" and turn right.

Because if her comment ,I had the old gospel song "oh sister, go on down to the river" in my head for the rest of the morning, but it's a good one to ride to.

Today's ride is another ride on the only highway through the delta which means flat country side, few towns or gas stations and very little shade. Although the somewhat cooler temperatures continue to stay in the mid to upper 70's instead of the mid to upper 80's, the sun is fierce, especially when there is no relief except the breeze.

We passed this strange builidng on the way out of Vicksburg, and were told later by one of the ladies, that it is indeed an active church, started by a local preacher of the tent meeting persuasion and built with his own two hands as a "work of praise to the good Lord Jesus."

I'm not sure what this says as even reading it up close didn't help but,
Amen and Hallelujah!

So we rode the ride, stopped at every SAG stop to munch cold melon, refill our water bottles and suck down a couple of pickles or pretzels and then got back on our way.

Since it was a relatively short day, and we were pushing to get off the road before it got to the heat of the day, we rolled into Yazoo about 1:30 pm. As we came through the center of town we thought we were home free and were chatting and looking for someplace to get lunch, a snack or at least a cold drink. Then there was this hill.

Somehow at the end of a hot and sweaty day, and still not being recovered fully from yesterdays' brain sucking 40 miles sneaky incline followed by 25 miles of rollers, this was just so much injury added to insult. Some of the ladies were quite vehement in their complaints at dinner, since there was an alternative flat shaded none major highway route through town. No doubt the cue sheets for future rides will be amended.

It was lovely to get into town and find the hotel rooms ready and the van with the trailer already there. Moira the Scottish rider had been there to help unload the baggage so it was all neatly stacked, all facing the same direction and grouped by color. How cool is that!
